Five yeses for Shane: U2 release ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’
U2’s new recording of The Pogues’ 1988 single is out now and will appear on 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan in November.
U2 have released their cover of “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” the Shane MacGowan song first issued by The Pogues in 1988. The recording is available now and is U2’s contribution to the forthcoming tribute album 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan.\n\nThe album is due on November 13 through Rubyworks. Its wide-ranging cast connects U2 with artists including Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Hozier, Glen Hansard, The Libertines, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Lisa O’Neill, Amble and Kingfishr. Kate Moss also appears on the project. The collection was developed in close partnership with Victoria Mary Clarke and Siobhan MacGowan, and takes its title from a project Shane had envisioned. It is intended as a celebration of the unruly mixture he made his own: Irish tradition, punk velocity, romance, politics and black humour. At least half of the participating artists’ royalties from the album will go to Dublin Simon Community, supporting people experiencing homelessness in Dublin — a cause MacGowan championed during his life.\n\nFor U2, this is both a tribute to a fellow Irish songwriter and a gloriously direct Friday release: loud, affectionate and carrying exactly as many yeses as advertised.
