A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Beautiful Day” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On All That You Can’t Leave Behind, “Beautiful Day” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Beautiful Day” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

There is also a sequencing point: this song changes the temperature of *All That You Can’t Leave Behind*. Even listeners who rate it lower may miss its function if it is removed.

Context matters here. Heard inside All That You Can’t Leave Behind, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 8.9. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production earns nearly every dramatic gesture.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Beautiful Day” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.
