The counterargument is economy. U2 are often strongest when the arrangement commits to one central idea, and “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” does not always make that choice.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” survive outside its original era.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.4. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Singles, B-Sides & Rarities, “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Beautiful Ghost/Introduction to Songs of Experience” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.
