The live question is complicated. A bigger arrangement can create momentum, while the studio version preserves details that disappear in an arena. I would keep both in the argument.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “City of Blinding Lights” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “City of Blinding Lights” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, “City of Blinding Lights” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “City of Blinding Lights” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 8.9. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production earns nearly every dramatic gesture.
