I keep coming back to the writing. “Elvis Presley and America” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

The live question is complicated. A bigger arrangement can create momentum, while the studio version preserves details that disappear in an arena. I would keep both in the argument.

Context matters here. Heard inside The Unforgettable Fire, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.0. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Elvis Presley and America” survive outside its original era.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Elvis Presley and America” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Elvis Presley and America” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.
