Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Even Better Than the Real Thing” survive outside its original era.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Achtung Baby, “Even Better Than the Real Thing” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Even Better Than the Real Thing” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside Achtung Baby, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.1. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Even Better Than the Real Thing” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.
