The live question is complicated. A bigger arrangement can create momentum, while the studio version preserves details that disappear in an arena. I would keep both in the argument.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.2. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “I Don’t Wanna See You Smile” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “I Don’t Wanna See You Smile” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

I’m slightly less persuaded. The production is characterful, but I sometimes hear the sound of How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb more clearly than the identity of this individual song.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb, “I Don’t Wanna See You Smile” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “I Don’t Wanna See You Smile” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.
