I keep coming back to the writing. “Lady with the Spinning Head” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside Singles, B-Sides & Rarities, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

I’m slightly less persuaded. The production is characterful, but I sometimes hear the sound of Singles, B-Sides & Rarities more clearly than the identity of this individual song.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Lady with the Spinning Head” survive outside its original era.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.8. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Lady with the Spinning Head” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Lady with the Spinning Head” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.
