The live question is complicated. A bigger arrangement can create momentum, while the studio version preserves details that disappear in an arena. I would keep both in the argument.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “One Life at a Time” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “One Life at a Time” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Days of Ash, “One Life at a Time” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “One Life at a Time” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.
