The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Peace on Earth” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

Replying to WalkOnWill

I’m slightly less persuaded. The production is characterful, but I sometimes hear the sound of All That You Can’t Leave Behind more clearly than the identity of this individual song.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Peace on Earth” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On All That You Can’t Leave Behind, “Peace on Earth” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Peace on Earth” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside All That You Can’t Leave Behind, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.
