POYXW: Picture of You (X+W)

I would still defend the original mix. Later versions can clarify the words, but clarity is not automatically the same thing as emotional force.

What keeps it in rotation for me is the tension between uplift and unease. Even when the song sounds open, there is enough friction to avoid simple sentimentality.

The counterargument is economy. U2 are often strongest when the arrangement commits to one central idea, and “Picture of You (X+W)” does not always make that choice.

I used to make the same criticism, but repeated listening shifted my attention from the surface production to the interaction underneath it.

That is why a numerical score can be misleading. I might call it a 6/10 as a standalone track and still think it is essential to the record.

There is also a sequencing point: this song changes the temperature of *How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb*. Even listeners who rate it lower may miss its function if it is removed.

For me the vocal performance resolves that. Bono does not treat every line with the same intensity, and that dynamic shape stops the song becoming one long declaration.

The live question is complicated. A bigger arrangement can create momentum, while the studio version preserves details that disappear in an arena. I would keep both in the argument.

I’m slightly less persuaded. The production is characterful, but I sometimes hear the sound of How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb more clearly than the identity of this individual song.

I agree about the space. Adam and Larry give the track its centre of gravity; without that restraint the larger production ideas would feel much less convincing.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Picture of You (X+W)” survive outside its original era.

Good point. I also think its reputation is partly shaped by where each listener entered the catalogue; hearing it in 2024 is different from discovering it retrospectively.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb, “Picture of You (X+W)” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Picture of You (X+W)” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.0. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Picture of You (X+W)” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.
