The counterargument is economy. U2 are often strongest when the arrangement commits to one central idea, and “Return of the Stingray Guitar” does not always make that choice.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Return of the Stingray Guitar” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Singles, B-Sides & Rarities, “Return of the Stingray Guitar” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “Return of the Stingray Guitar” survive outside its original era.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Return of the Stingray Guitar” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside Singles, B-Sides & Rarities, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.
