That distinction between atmosphere and melody is useful. I hear the atmosphere first, but the melody is what makes “The Showman (Little More Better)” survive outside its original era.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Songs of Experience, “The Showman (Little More Better)” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

The counterargument is economy. U2 are often strongest when the arrangement commits to one central idea, and “The Showman (Little More Better)” does not always make that choice.

I keep coming back to the writing. “The Showman (Little More Better)” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside Songs of Experience, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.

My rating is close to the community’s 7.0. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production occasionally competes with the core melody.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “The Showman (Little More Better)” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “The Showman (Little More Better)” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.
