My rating is close to the community’s 9.4. I admire the ambition, although I think the studio production earns nearly every dramatic gesture.

The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Achtung Baby, “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.

Context matters here. Heard inside Achtung Baby, this feels more purposeful than it can on a shuffled playlist. The surrounding material changes the weight of the song.
