The most interesting comparison is studio versus live. “Walk to the Water” has an arrangement sturdy enough to be reshaped, but the original recording still defines its atmosphere for me.

A song can be important without being a personal favourite. “Walk to the Water” is a good test case: craft, historical place and the urge to replay it are three different questions.

Edge’s choices are unusually disciplined here. The memorable part is not simply a guitar sound; it is how the instrument creates motion around Bono’s phrasing without filling every gap.

The arrangement is the argument for me. On Singles, B-Sides & Rarities, “Walk to the Water” leaves enough space for the rhythm section and guitar texture to pull in different directions without losing the song.

I keep coming back to the writing. “Walk to the Water” works because the emotional idea is direct, while the performance leaves some ambiguity around it. That balance is a very U2 strength.
