It's not telling us it's opinion, it's telling us what real humans - including hard core fane - think.
And it's spot on. The comment on the lyrics is 100%. They suck.
Is Chat spot on about the EPs?
I’m guessing yes. Lots of fans seem to like those EPs, at least by reading the room on this forum.
What does that have to do with the awful SOD?
Just pointing out your cherry picking with Chat, that’s all.
I wasn’t cherry picking anything. I simply pointed out the relevant parts of its response to my question. The EPs weren’t and aren’t relevant.
But whatever…

Quote from: SlyDanner on August 14, 2026, 02:33:16 AM here is Chat GPT's answer to my question about how is the SOD single being received... wow... 8) 8) 8)
If you mean U2’s new 2026 single “Street of Dreams,” then… no, you’re not imagining it. It has been getting a surprisingly negative reaction, including from longtime U2 fans. It was released July 7 as the first single from their forthcoming album.
My take: it isn't outright terrible, but it is a pretty weak U2 song—and especially disappointing given what they were capable of on the 2026 EPs.
Why it doesn't work The lyrics are the biggest problem. Lines like “Your dream needs you / Your life gonna find you / Your fear not gonna blind you” feel more like inspirational slogans than Bono at his best. The verses don't really develop. The song seems to keep circling around the same ideas rather than building toward something. The production is oddly muddy and overprocessed. Some listeners have specifically complained that the mix obscures Bono's vocal and makes parts sound unfinished. The chorus is catchy—but almost too obviously designed for a stadium. There's a big, anthemic quality to it, but it feels manufactured rather than earned. The Spanish “calle de los sueños” refrain is potentially interesting, but it doesn't really connect the different sections into a coherent song.
And here's the really interesting part: U2 fans aren't simply saying “U2 sucks now.” Some of the discussion is specifically saying that Street of Dreams is disappointing because the band had just produced some genuinely strong late-career material. One fan described it as “mostly bland” but acknowledged the catchy chorus and strong intro/outro.
I think the most damning criticism is that it sounds like several fragments that were assembled into a U2 anthem, rather than a song that naturally evolved into an anthem. One longtime fan discussion makes essentially that exact observation.
My rating: about 5/10.
And I'd go further: it's probably one of U2's weakest lead singles. Not because the band has lost its ability to make good music, but because Street of Dreams feels strangely generic and overproduced compared with the more adventurous material they've released recently.
Chat is pretty high on the recent EPs.

I think it’s strictly marketing to push the song to the masses, as SC put it.

To all who speculated they would tie this single with the World Cup, hats off.
And to all who speculated the EPs were a sign that U2 relaxed a bit about marketing, think again.
Sometimes it feels like this band needs to be corporate. I know the kids playing soccer thing is supposed to be good, that BOA supposedly helped with RED… but it really looks like a commercial for a bank.
Beckham is ambassador with Bank of America and the Street Child United initiative.
Now, who approached who in this « partnership » remains TBD.

If I were maybe a 12 or 13 year old girl, I might like it. Reminds of Gorge Lucas when he said, "I made Star Wars for 12-year-old kids, at the time we were going through a dark period with the Vietnam War and we needed to dream. That's why fans of the first trilogy didn't like the prequels – they weren't kids anymore."
This tune does not i anyway, IMO, hold a grown ass adult rock and roll vibe.
Nothing earth shattering about the new single. The chorus is catchy, but that’s about it. Nice bass line, silences included. The other band members don’t really shine. Bono doesn’t stand out. Edge is on minimal duty : a crude riff and that’s about it. Slide guitar at the end. I’m still baffled that he doesn’t get that everytime he picks up a bottleneck it’s an admission of lack of creativity. Nice melodies in intro / outro.
I really don’t get how this particular song is supposed to put U2 back on the map. Spoiler alert : it won’t.

Thinking back, I can't come up with a single time U2 chose a song for their lead single that was in the top half of that album's material. IMO, none of these qualify:
The Blackout The Miracle GOYB Vertigo Beautiful Day Discotheque Numb The Fly Desire WOWY Pride
This actually makes me feel a slight tinge of hope that the entire album won't be as godawful as SOD seems to be based on the snippets we've heard.
Yeah I think we are going to get the typical “soft centre” approach, with good songs at beginning and end, and three of four changers in the middle. Which is fine, it’s about the best that can be hoped for given that we have had two really good EPs already. If the EPs were the album, I’d be fine with it. Five or six of the songs are wormed into my brain.
Yup. The last U2 album I can just listen to front to back came out 29 years ago so I'm used to it by now.

The title sounds like it was created using AI tools.
The sound of the music will give an accurate indication of the sound of the rest of the album. 1980s, 1990s, or post-2000s U2 sounds. I think I already know.
U2songs has had this single release news published for a couple days now. not exactly a scoop.
I wish CG would use his source and ask why the band was photoshopped walking in the ocean.

Are they promoting or not?
You might be on to something here...
P.S. in Sly's defense, IPAs do cause brain rot
For the record, that post was fueled and inspired by a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Not IPA.
IPADS is real. Get help!
Even more troubling. Coming into a fan forum of said barf inducing band, just to take the time to complain about people discussing said band. Public health authorities should to be concerned about the ravages of IPAs.
Grown adults giving a shit about whatever U2, the most barf inducing band in human history is going to publish next is troubling. The social media aspect even more so.

Wait, they have a new management person? Is her name Pauline McGuinness?
That'd be funny, if the new management person turned out to be Paul McGuinness, in surprisingly convincing drag.

It would be funny that they all sat in a room, listened to the EPs, then the LP, and someone said... "but you've already released all the good stuff !".
It could be the opposite though. To my ear, they very often lead with one of the worst songs on the album, and the best stuff never gets airplay. Boots, for an obvious example, but there are many. They/their organization, have this notion of what they need to release to get a big hit that is terribly misguided. How may people heard "Song of the Future" on the radio instead of "The Tears Of Things", for example?
All I'm saying is that it wouldn't be out of character for Street of Dreams to be the worst thing on the album, but someone is convincing themselves that this is the big hit.
A few months before SOE, Best thing about me leaked with Kygo. I remember people from the record company convinced it had hit potential.

Seems a little late for that, if they were going to.
Would you be that surprised if they put out a video for a new single on tv right before the start of the final?

Quote from: SlyDanner on June 29, 2026, 07:28:09 PM NLOTH was also delayed and the world benefited from the inclusion of Boots, Crazy and SUC. These guys really know what they're doing.
They had to do it so that they could get a bunch of tracks that 14 year olds would drive to number one, just like happens every time they do this. 5% of the time, it works every time.

Seems the song was finished & a video made.
If they are reacting to negative feedback, they may go back to the whole album. Wouldn't be the first time.
A pity. After the EP's, thought they were on a roll.
Yeah same here. They’re competing for attention with the World Cup, so I’m not sure they have decided to cancel the single, they may have just decided the timing isn’t right.

POP was certainly pushed back however i dont know if there was a lead single date that got moved or cancelled. Does this mean we are getting another POP album?
POP got pushed back because they were still recording in the middle of the night before the day the tapes were contractually obligated to be delivered to Island.

That's a good point. You often see big budget Hollywood films pushed back 6 months or even a year because one of the prime movie-opening weekends has either too much competition or something in a similar genre. Although it's not like the Cup schedule came out of nowhere.

Didn't U2 change direction on SOI after the underwhelming response to Invisible?
Thought they would know fans don't want dad rock.
invisible was better than most of the shit on soi
agreed, I thought it was decent.
although IIRC didn't they substitute electronic drums for Larry or something like that? cringe move, if true.
Invisible is pretty good up to the point where the song just ends so they can insert some Bono The Activist lines.
If you listen to the "Making of Invisible" video closely, it's very clear that In A Life is Invisible's twin brother, the same rough draft taken in another direction. Which isn't really a secret; the band even points it out by putting that snare from Invisible in the song.
Invisible is a very conflicted song that is forgettable
At minimum, it needed one more verse, but they had to cut that in order to do Bono-isms. I wonder how many of the millions who have moved to Europe over the past ten years think that there is no them, only us?

The highly anticipated June 12 digital drop did not occur. Discussions on Reddit indicate management requested the removal of promotional details and placeholder videos, possibly to address mixed feedback on preliminary single cover art or to finalize the mixing of the track.
Discussions across U2 enthusiast platforms like u2songs and U2 Interference indicate multiple factors behind the sudden pull. These include mixed early fan reactions to the track's sound, necessary re-mixing, and a decision by the band's management to adjust the timeline for their incoming 15th studio album.

Not really sure to be honest. I know they sampled drums on MOFO along with Mullen, but its hard to imagine substituting him entirely.

Yeah it was just awful after getting hopes up from the two EPs which have some really good songs. It sounds like they’re chasing the hits again, and it just won’t happen.
