GENERAL U2 TALK

My take: we’ve seen a lot worse. But also, we’ve seen much better.
I gave it a 4. Leaning toward 3. Catchy and poppy chorus which they trot out often. Gives me I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t vibes, which is also a 4-3.

Difficult to get a proper hold on the overall reaction as there are so many platforms but I would say that the vast majority are positive or very positive about the song now.
Similarly the vast majority are really looking forward to the album and tour. Definitely going to be an expensive one (and justifying gig tickets is becoming increasingly difficult) but there’s still more than enough for me to go and see them 2 or 3 times as usual.
I mean, I think I speak for lots of us when I say that if there is ANY correlation between how good I consider a U2 song to be and how popular it is, it moves in the wrong direction (as in, what the masses consider popular is usually an indication that it is crap).
Sure, there have been overlaps (like with TJT and ZooTV), but in those cases the masses just accidentally had good taste for a second. ;D
That wasn’t my point but thanks for the input

Oh please. I give everything this band releases a fair chance. Multiple listens to their recent EPs, and multiple listens to SOD. The EPs do nothing for me, even if I agree there are some interesting moments that I can appreciate.
As for SOD, it is just a really good, catchy chorus that is unfortunately stitched together with garbage verses and awful, childlike lyrics. Literally a Coldplay copy and paste.
I read a review somewhere that the lyrics were from a fortune cookie. If you people enjoy that, okie dokie. But I suspect all this love is more a reflection of how crap their last albums have been and longing for the ‘old U2’ sound.

Quote from: Amor fati on July 14, 2026, 06:51:09 PM I originally rated this song a 6 but have upgraded it to a 7 - it has grown on me and is probably their best single since Beautiful Day. People who have only heard it one time and think it sucks probably thought it sucked before they ever heard it. I suspect some will come around to it or at least hate it less. It's miles above nearly everything on the last two albums.
Ya think?

Celebrating the success of the EP's and the future success of the next album, which will be TJT part 2.
A stadium tour in 2027 will have fans at Wembley Stadium thinking it is 1987 again.
When SOD is played everyone will have a chuckle about how they doubted U2 when first hearing it in July 2026. When they were really just teasing the fans.

I wonder how this video would play at home if they had Ireland as the backdrop instead of (of course) the USA.
Maybe in concert they'll play the video of that Somali in Belfast beheading that Irishman in the street while they play this song about open borders? You know, get back to that good ol' '90s irony. ;D :-\
Given that it's in Mexico, maybe they could show some scenes of how Mexicans treat those who illegally cross their southern border. Ask your average Mexican what they think of Guatemalans.
Oh, but that's different because reasons.

At least Best Thing was written about something real... his wife... while cringy and awful it at least had that.

That’s Ronaldo pointing at a shrewsbury town (my team) badge (4th tier of English football). Just a bit of a joke. I don’t even particularly like him. By all means don’t find it funny but A) double check you have SOME idea what you are banging on about and b) be careful using phrases like ‘it’s embarrassing’ - fairly certain that’s pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour on this forum?

Well done, my friend.
A glass half full is possibly all we can hope for now. From the band. And from the World.
Peace.
That just may be the post of the year, and he didn’t even mention IPA’s.
I’m with you Amari F. Is it perfect? No. Does it match up with the hits of their prime? No. But in this world that certainly needs a little joy, I’m digging this new song.
Appreciate the comments here. Can Yall let me know when the awards ceremony will be? I might want to attend.
Ceremony will be held ‘round the Moon.
Date and time TBA.
Just don’t let Sly bartend.
No fucking way.

Well done, my friend.
A glass half full is possibly all we can hope for now. From the band. And from the World.
Peace.

I'm not a fan of the song, but I will say that it's good sportscasting background/time for a commercial break music.

I gave it a 9 (and would up it to 10 I if I could be bothered to work out how) and have been a fan since 1992 including 18 gigs. So, you’re wrong.
1. I don't agree with Zero on much, but he's right on this. 2. Ooh, you've been a fan since 1992? Wow. I have been a fan since 1985. I agree. Boots is a bit schizophrenic, trying to do too much squeezed into a few minutes. But the middle 8 and main riff alone lift the track far above SOD and many other platitude-filled offerings from the band.
I’m really shocked that this band would stoop so low as to force this shit into every World Cup watching home. Versus letting the world discover and love it organically.
This is a real surprise.
Quote from: Loyal Deserter on July 10, 2026, 04:56:51 PM It’s so fucking boring.
If I try as hard as physically possible to be positive: The hook is catchy. The melody of that single title line could be a part of a good song. The first 10 seconds are fine I guess. The bridge is kind of interesting musically. It’s Beatlesy, which is unusual for them. Some of the bassline is ok.
However: The lyrics are so bad. It seems like Bono can only speak through office motivational posters and your liberal aunt’s bumper stickers these days.
“Don’t you give up on your dream for the many not just the few Don’t you give up and your dreams won’t give up on you.”
You have got to be fucking kidding me. Also the verse melody sucks. Really, everything about the verses sucks.
All that said, Bono is not the worst offender here. I do not have the words to describe how awful the guitar part is. I can say it sounds like a drug commercial. I can say it sounds like AI Edge with some coldplay thrown in. I can say it’s chipper and jangly and corny and boring and soulless and weak and uninspired. None of this is enough. I don’t understand how this came from the same man who’s on achtung baby. It’s somehow both edge-by-numbers and completely antithetical to everything that made him great. He was this great sonic architect, but this part is utterly formless.
Yup
Street of Dreams will air in the USA and Canada during the World Cup final hydration breaks. Don’t ask me how I know but I know.

Was hopeing for another SOI or ATYCLB. Which would have been impressive after a shorter gap.

Hoped for something similar now which would be impressive after the EP's.

I got no problem with Bono singing, spiritual lyrics, even if I don’t agree with them. No problem with Easter parade, resurrection song. Problem with this one. The lyrics are trait, cookies, and cream stuff. It’s just not what I want from them.

In Bono's defense, the melody doesn't allow much development in terms of actual sentences during the verses.
Just watched the video. The song is crap. Edge's guitar hook is ok, but Bono doesn't show up for it at all. GOYB all over again. It's a big zilch. Better not be indicative of the album.
Musically it will be if like most U2 albums it has a cohesive sound.
Reminds me of 'A Head Full of Dreams' & 'Everyday Life'.
The first Coldplay albums I did not like before giving up on them.

If you turn the YouTube captions on, Bono introduces the bass player "Alan Turner", and when the crowd is chanting "U2" at the end, they're saying "Go Bears".

Follows on perfectly from coexist on EL too. Okay, not quite in the league of MLK into Streets but a nice touch thematically. Not sure if it’s going to be track 1 on the new album though. Possibly.
Just checked my listening numbers. It’s already at number 2 (behind tears) of all the songs they’ve released this year (and I laced the EPs pretty hard). Might you need to give it a few listens? Or maybe it’s not for you. Either way - I’m one very happy U2 fan (it’s been a while!).

Verses are clunky, but I completely disagree it’s “cookies and crème”. Not to many current pop songs I imagine that are about Jesus’s message for the poor.

And it’s SO much better than Atomic City or that euros football nonsense. Or, in fact, most things on SOI and (to a lesser extent) SOE. Genuinely don’t understand the hate - it’s a near perfect U2 lead single at this point.
If SOD had been included in one of the 2 EPs, it would have been the second best song of the 12 - after tears - for me. In fact a combination of those 2 songs would be a fabulous basis for the new album.

Genuinely curious why you and others hate the lyrics so much?
Are they up there with Bono’s best? I don’t think so, but the message fits well with what they’ve been singing about for 40+ years. A bit clunky in the verses for sure, but I think the lyrics in the opening prayer and also the chorus are very good. It’s a play on the message of Christ…blessed are the poor, theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. In the song the Street of Dreams is Heaven. Broken are the chosen on the Street of Dreams.
God hear me shout Lend your ear to my prayer When I’m far from anywhere Down to my last breath of air
La calle, calle de los sueños All the doors are open on the street of dreams La Calle, calle de los sueños Broken are the chosen on the street of dreams
For the rating i went with a 6ix based on the intro / outro and the middle8, also the dominating chorus is quite catchy, making this somewhat unique for them.
I like experimental U2 and believe it or not this seems a little outside of the box for 21st century u2 given their recent singles were pretty strict to a certain formula.
Also love the video and feel like this would sound pretty good live.
Don't believe SOI had any promo songs.
The Miracle came out around the sane time as the album.
Believe bands release a few songs before the full album release. Muse did that over several months before there latest
Could be a long wait until the next album.
Can give U2 the benefit of the doubt on SOD. After the EP's.
A lot will depend on the second promo song.
Believe SOE had Little Things played live on a chat show as the first song. Which fans liked.
YTBT was then released which fans did not like much. Although said it sounded better live when that was also played on a chat show.
GOOYOW, AS & The Blackout put me right off.
SOD reminds me of this.
But doubt that U2 will be going all 'Ghost Stories' on us. Lightweight Coldplay esq pop/rock, maybe.
Too early for me to rank it yet.
However, I’m more and more of the belief that the new album will be a sort of concept album, possibly focusing on immigration, probably contrasting/comparing with Jesus’ life. I think that may explain some of the things they tried to do here.
Just a hunch, but at one point I thought I heard whispers that this album could be something like the American Idiot album or the Jesus of Suburbia song.

That opening line is just more barf mode U2.
Love the opening lines. They have been writing spiritual lyrics since 1980.
"Oh Lord, if I had anything / Anything at all / I'd give it to you”
"You broke the bonds / Loosed the chains / Carried the cross / Of my shame.“
"I waited patiently for the Lord / He inclined and heard my cry."
“I will bless the Lord at all times”
I gave it a 3 but after seeing those lyrics I kinda wish we had negative numbers as an option.
I would have given it 1 but it has some sounds in it that elevates it to a 2.

The intro had potential and the rest is just the most dull, stupid tripe. It could have gotten a 3 for being not too offensive despite being boring AF, but the lyrics are fucking embarrassing, so it is actually offensive.
I was also thinking just how collossally uncool they are. I mean, that's not new, but it struck me that I think that I, a lowly middle aged mom, might actually be cooler than both Bono and Edge, actual professional rock stars.

Listen I'm really sorry to break it to folks that you are very likely not going to get some groundbreaking experimental plus guitar rock masterpiece like AB or a critical darling of excellent craftsmanship like TJT. the monoculture is gone so the return on investment on something like that equates to the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
What your gonna get is easy to record, easy to listen to, fun and made to grab as much quick attention as possible so they can load up for the next tour. We are likely never breaking out of the post-2000 MOR safe stuff. It's not even the bands fault - the enshitification of everything won't allow it.

They wanna be like Coldplay now? Flashing wristbands and all that jazz?
Well, in a sense, I think that could be part of it.
It kind of struck me today that I think the upcoming tour is going to be a celebration of the 50 years together, and they are unlikely to want a somber vibe, and are going with the “uplifting” thing.
I kinda think this tour may have a 360 vibe, in terms of the grandiose per se and the vibe that’s gonna be pushed is happy go lucky.
I suspect this may actually be the bands last major tour. I think they’ll still play more mini tours in the future, à la what Bon Jovi is about to undertake (mini residency at MSG).
As it stands, I’m disappointed by SOD, but am still waiting to cast my vote. I’m really hoping it’s not a reflection of the rest of the tracks.
But I also feel U2 may do more surprise EP type releases down the road. The mainstream fluff for the bigger picture, and these special releases for the rest.
Hard to say. I recall seeing Steve Lillywhite say in an interview recently that the band usually gets into trouble when they try to be all things to all people, and the SOD single seems to indicate that, especially after what we were treated to with the EP’s.
Quote from: jick on July 07, 2026, 10:05:22 PM U2 have released the single that everyone didn't know they need.
The song starts with a synth opening and distorted double-tracked vocals which evokes their experimental Achtung Baby to POP era of experimentation.
Then opening line starts with "God" which is a reminded of U2's Bible-reading Christian-rock DNA which they have carried on throughout their careers.
Then the song jumps straight to the chorus which shows the Motown Records influence which coined the phrase "don't bore us, get to the chorus."
The foreign language chorus is not foreign for U2 as they have always prided themselves as a global band and incorporated that with a hit this century in Vertigo, and also in a hit in the past century in Gloria where they incorporated Latin in their chorus.
Now, let's go to the musical elements. It has the signature Larry Mullen Jr. style which displays his marching band influence and a beat only he can create. It is the backbone of the verse where the most prominent musical element is the bass of Adam Clayton, a reminder of how the bass has driven U2's biggest hits such as New Year's Day and With Or Without You. Then when The Edge kicks in, it is his signature guitar sound that sounds very familiar, yet very fresh. Ever the minimalist, this song even features less strings and less notes played than the typical Edge riff which is a sign of the wisdom he has gained from experience.
So where does Bono fit in all this? Well, compared to more recent releases like Songs of Surrender, Bono's voice is less prominent in the mix - sometimes with treatment added. And most of his lines are spoken word, or shouts where The Edge replies to him. This shows that Bono has now surrendered to the music of the band, swallowed his ego, and just the music do the talking. Even lyrically, Bono has surrendered to God and to prayer.
Musically, how has this displayed U2's evolution? For starters, you'd be hard-pressed to find a previous U2 song with a synth opening that goes straight to a sing-along foreign language chorus. Then when you get to the bridge, check out that chord pattern, progression, and melody. It is something U2 have never done before and shows that they are musically going to new places. And while the guitar solo seems to bee typical, if you notice the tone, Edge just tweaks it enough to give a Latin or world music tinge to it.

But where are the politics? Well, U2 are old men with wisdom - not anymore the same young activists angrily singing Sunday Bloody Sunday. So they execute it now with more finesse. The choice of Mexico as the location, with Spanish as a chorus language, and the title itself which is Streets of Dreams is similar to what Bono has always been advocating: a world with open borders and an America where immigrants can pursue their dreams. But if that is not the intpretation the listener chooses, then the song can also be interpreted in many ways - which is a hallmark of all great U2 songs. Bono's lyrics have always been bold but vague enough that each listener can fill in the gaps and add their own meaning. That has been the lure of the band and U2 have continued on this trajectory with this song.
Just read somewhere that Coldplay are suing U2 for stealing their pop cringe act.
This song is 100% Coldplay.

Yeah I came away from the EPs with like 5 good tracks, which is as much as I could have expected. I am worried that the EPs represented U2 being a bit flippant and cavalier while the album will be U2 trying REAL HARD TO BE GREAT. :-\

I will say i really like the intro and outro, quite lovely actually. Not Streets (have no name) quality, but certainly better than the bulk of the past two albums. Then there is the chorus, lots and lots of chorus. In fact its basically intro-chorus-middle8-chorus-outro. There are some random shouting in-between which i guess are the verses? Luckily the rhythm section makes up for the awkwardness there.
Without the intro and outro this song is really lacking....but the bookends of things and the middle 8 (which sounds inserted and as someone else mentioned perhaps too short, but i do enjoy) help it float the bumpy waters it seems to tread.
The chorus with its trademark Edge chiming and strong rhythm section will be what it is remembered for. Its stuck in my head and i guess that means it has done its job as a lead single. If only Bono could soar a little higher here.
The video is really good....possibly the best video they have made since Magnificent....as far as uniqueness and a hopeful message i can see what they were trying to achieve. Beautiful Day was a soaring anthem with lovers in an airport and the band playing on rugs on the tarmac underneath roaring airplanes. This isn't exactly that, but we have an adoring crowd in a historical city as the band rides the bus and eventually walks down a random street. Its quite an effective piece of art in that respect. And crashing someone's apartment and balcony is bit like stealing an apple and attempting to steal someone's luggage. Nice job here.
It's uplifting and i will take it....but i have to abstain from rating at least for now....considering i require an initial cooling off period after first listen(s).
I’m with you. This isn’t the type of music I’m typically drawn to…but it works. I like the Beach Boys sounding intro/outro..it’s poppy, but different. Also hear some Beatles influences in it.
The verses don’t do much, but that chorus sticks in your head like a piece of gum to a shoe.

Here's my take on how Street of Dreams got made:
Bono: "Hey aren't there some World Cup games in Mexico? Someone get me a Spanish to English dictionary because I'm gonna turn the countdown from Vertigo into a song."
I’ve had it on a few times now. I can’t quite put my finger on why I like it so much. I hated songs like Love is bigger & you’re the best thing and this is in a similar ilk, but SOD works. The build up, the hook, the call and response, the unabashed 4 choruses. Works even better with the video. Bravo bravo U2 - the most promising start to a campaign for a long long time…

To me, it's far far worse than Boots.
But maybe slightly better than You’re the Best Thing. I'll probably listen to it just as often: never again.

I gotta reserve my vote for the moment, mostly due to confusion.
I’m probably guilty of being too easy on the band during my fandom, but this one has me scratching my head.
Def not from any kind of “unreasonable guitar” album. But it definitely fits for that sort of “Carnival” vibe Bono mentioned they are looking to achieve for their upcoming live shows.
Intro and outro are kinda interesting, but the song itself is really baffling. I’ll cast a vote in a few days. Wanna see if it grows.

I liked Easter Lily. I haven't enjoyed their lead singles from the last four albums. I loathe Vertigo but i like HTDAAB overall. I'll still be buying the vinyl and CD.
Believe this would the first of 3/4 promo songs. Prior to album release.
SOE had YTBT, GOOYOW, AS & The Blackout. Little Things was also played live.
I give it a 2. The intro and outro are cool (hence 2 and not 1) but the rest is garbage. Easily the worst of the new songs so far this year, although really its only competition was American Obituary which I like the sentiment of but just is musically bland. With this one, somehow the verses are actually worse than the chorus which is impressive, I'm almost wondering if Bono is playing a joke on us.
"Break out Break through Break in Your dream needs you"
the hell is this? Completely amelodic so I can't even ignore how lame it is by appreciating the music. I'm taking GOYB and Miracle over this every day.

Different to other lead singles.
Pride, Desire, Vertigo & Boots attempted to be loud in your face lead singles. They all worked except for Boots.
SOD is just a laid back pop song.
Quote from: Zoo adam on July 07, 2026, 01:25:56 PM Not as good as The Miracle. Love a bit of buzz guitar.

Put it in the Invisible & Atomic City class.
The Miracle was better. I put this is the same category as GOOYOW, California, Crazy Tonight, and YTBTAM. Basically just garbage that, if it were the band's introductory output I would never have given them a second listen. This is simply NOT what U2 was for the first two decades of their career.
Surely this is the final straw for some members. Surely there are better things to do than consistently slagging a band you’ve not liked/enjoyed for so long?
Same here, the middle 8 gives some musical interest, but that's about it. It's like a sausage made of U2 bits and bobs.

It is a catchy feel good song with a summer vibe. Not offensive and not bad enough to make the listener cringe.
Short & accessible enough to get radio play on different types of stations.
It's catchiness is not enough for it become a universal U2 song. It would need to end up in a film or tv programme.
5/10 This just isn't music i would bother listening to if i wasn't already a fan.
Maybe the other songs on the album are too 'unreasonable' to be released as lead single.
Having SOD in the middle of heavy guitar songs would be strange.
Album skipper for sure. Poor quality song. Is this the heavy gutar driven rock bono alluded too? Its pretty grim.
I gave it 3/10. 2.75 of those pts were for the short middle 8
Considering their singles are rarely the best music on their albums, I'll give the record a spin, but will probably skip this one. It's worse than the most MOR offerings on Easter Lily, so I'm not getting my hopes up beyond knee height.

Agree with this take. Will be sorely disappointed if it’s somehow the best song on the album. I went 6.
Would not say I am disappointed. But only because I heard snippets in the weeks before. So was not expecting much.
I hate it. I absolutely love Easter Lily and was in that mindset when pressing play on the single. What a massive disappointment.

It had to be released as lead single. Even after the negative feedback from snippets. The making of the video had been all over social media.
If the release delay was to beef up the song, I would hate to hear the original version.
Thought there might have been an Edge solo half way through to help it. Just needed to be 30 seconds. But the song just continues with the same beat.
Okay not much competition but best lead single since vertigo by miles. Video is great. As long as there are a few gems on the album (tears of things proves they can still do it) and I get to see them a few times in the next year or so, I’ll be more than a happy customer - especially with Bs voice seemingly in better shape. I’ve gone 9/10 based on previous lead singles.

There's no excuse for putting out shite. This album is just an excuse for doing a stadium tour and getting their hands on some of the Oasis lolly. We can all imagine how this song is going to get the crowds going.
Must admit I have been humming it to myself the last few weeks. And that was just after hearing snippets.
It's alright. Not super memorable, but not terrible.
I think we have to assume all future U2 releases are going to be very ephemeral...some attention from the fan base, but overall released and then soon after forgotten about.
Nice intro. Clunky verse. Mediocre chorus. Too stop and start. They’ve done so many good songs on the two EPs that this is yet another disappointing lead single aimed at a non existent crossover audience. Cos ya know, teenagers love to listen to 65 year old musicians
It was pretty cool at the end where they went through someone’s apartment, like it’s something rock bands do all the time.
